Barack Obama on Wednesday marked the 100th day of his presidency after a whirlwind start in which he has signaled a new approach on policies from the economy to climate change to U.S. relations with Iran. Some have used the milestone to assess Obama’s policies, even as analysts cautioned it was too soon to say whether his long list of initiatives will yield success.

U.K. to pull out of Iraq one month earlier – Defence Secretary

British Defence Secretary John Hutton announced on a visit to Iraq on Thursday that British troops would leave the country one month earlier than initially planned, U.K. media reported.
Hutton was in Basra for a service to honor the 179 British personnel killed during the six-year conflict in Iraq.

A car has driven into a crowd of people in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn during celebrations for Queen’s Day, national media reported on Thursday.
Dutch media reports say at least 14 people were injured. It is not yet clear if the attack was targeted at the royals.
The incident occurred while an open-top bus carrying Queen Beatrix and other members of the royal family was passing the crowd in the city, some 90 km southeast of Amsterdam. Read more

Russia’s Admiral Panteleyev missile destroyer has detained a boat carrying 29 suspected pirates off the Somali coast, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.
A new task force from Russia’s Pacific Fleet led by the destroyer joined anti-piracy operations on Monday off the Horn of Africa.
“A search of the detained vessel resulted in the discovery of seven Kalashnikov assault rifles, several handguns, portable navigation equipment, fuel canisters, and a large number of spent cartridges,” the ministry said in a statement. Read more
U.S. troops want to stay in Iraq for good.

The US military command in Iraq addressed the Iraqi government yesterday with a request to revise the terms for the US troops to pull out from the war-torn country. The Pentagon said Iraq could plunge into chaos in case the US servicemen leave the country because the Iraqi police supposedly will not be possible to control the situation. In the meantime, the US military has been accused of making a number of actions in violation of previously achieved agreements as US soldiers begin to arrest local officers for their unwillingness to cooperate with the United States. The first human case of swine flu in Europe has been confirmed in Spain, the country’s government said on Monday.
Spanish Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez said a 23-year-old Spanish man who recently returned from Mexico started showing symptoms of the virus on Saturday and was later hospitalized in Almansa in southeast Spain.
The minister said another 20 other people in Spain are suspected of infection with the virus. Read more
