Astronomers discovered the system of so-called canals on the surface of the red planet. Percival Lowell, a well-known astronomer, set out a version of their artificial origin in his book. The mystery of life on Mars has become one of the most talked-about subjects in the field of space exploration since then.
“The War of the Worlds” written by Herbert Wells in 1898 became the first book about the invasion of extraterrestrial creatures. The creatures came to Earth from Mars, of course, and perceived humans as food. Read more

A 10-year deal announced…

Microsoft finally persuaded Yahoo to surrender control of the Internet’s second most popular search engine and join it in a daunting battle — taking on the overwhelming dominance of Google in the online advertising market.

A 10-year deal announced Wednesday gives Microsoft its best shot yet to show its new search technology, Bing, is as good as or better than Google’s. Microsoft also hopes to use Yahoo to divert sales from Google, which generates more than $20 billion a year from ads.

Gaining access to Yahoo’s audience would instantly more than triple Bing’s U.S. market share to 28 percent. That’s still a far cry from the remarkable 65 percent of U.S. searches handled by Google, according to the research firm comScore Inc.

152 400x400 A 10 year deal announced... By joining forces, Microsoft and Yahoo are betting they will be able to focus on their respective strengths. By turning over responsibility for search technology to Microsoft, Yahoo can concentrate on sales of billboard-style advertising on the Web — and figuring out how to keep luring traffic to its Web sites, which already attract more than 570 million people worldwide every month.

While the agreement shapes up as a potential boon for Microsoft, it was greeted in the stock market as a letdown for Yahoo. Just 14 months ago, Microsoft dangled $9 billion in front of Yahoo in an attempt to forge a search advertising partnership, only to be rebuffed. Yahoo had also turned down Microsoft’s $47.5 billion bid to buy the entire company.

Yahoo has been struggling so badly since then that Microsoft isn’t paying any money in advance. Instead, it will give Yahoo 88 percent of the search ad sales made on its Web site, above the usual commission of 70 to 80 percent.

By spending less on its own search technology, Yahoo expects to boost its annual operating profit by about $500 million — but not until 2012, when the two companies expect to have all the pieces of a complex technological puzzle in place.

“I think a lot of people are kind of looking at the numbers and seeing a lot of question marks where they expected to see exclamation points,” said Scott Kessler, a Standard & Poor’s equity analyst.

Yahoo Inc. shares plunged $2.08, or 12 percent, to $15.14 as investors expressed disappointment over the absence of an immediate windfall. Microsoft Corp. shares gained 33 cents to $23.80 while Google Inc. shares shed $3.61 to $436.24.

It took Carol Bartz, Yahoo’s chief executive, just six months to strike a deal with Microsoft — something that neither of her predecessors, Terry Semel and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, seemed interested in doing.

“This move makes up for a lot of the stupid mistakes made by the preceding administration,” said technology analyst Rob Enderle, who thinks Yahoo will be able to devote more energy to developing services to compete with online hangouts like Facebook.

Shortly after her arrival, Bartz made it clear she was willing to farm out Yahoo’s search engine for “boatloads of money” as long as she as thought the company would still get adequate information about its users’ interests. Bartz predicted the deal will enrich the company over the long run.

09 ASTRONl 70x70 Final spacewalk. Two astronauts will venture into open space again Monday on a fifth and final spacewalk of the shuttle Endeavour’s mission to complete the International Space Station.
Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn spent the final hours leading up to their task preparing their spacesuits and tools and reviewing procedures, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) officials said.
The final spacewalk is expected to run about six and a half hours.
endeavour skk 293x400 Final spacewalk.During their fourth walk on Friday, Marshburn and Cassidy installed new batteries on one of the oldest of the four solar arrays that power the space station 350 kilometers (215 miles) above Earth.
The six newly fitted batteries “function as expected,” the U.S. space agency said, noting that the old batteries were stored on a cargo carrier that will be placed in Endeavour’s cargo barrier later in the day.
On Wednesday, NASA had ordered spacewalking astronauts back into the space station 30 minutes early after a spacesuit was found to be working improperly.
Higher than normal carbon dioxide levels were found in Cassidy’s spacesuit due to a problem with its lithium hydroxide canister, the U.S. space agency said, adding he had not been in any danger.
The carbon dioxide removal unit continued to operate in manual mode Sunday.
Cassidy and his partner Dave Wolf managed to replace only two of the six batteries, so part of Friday’s outing was to install the remaining four.
Each ISS battery measures 40 inches by 36 inches by 18 inches (101 centimeters by 90 centimeters by 45 centimeters), weighs 375 pounds (170 kilos) and is designed to last 6.5 years.
Endeavour took off from Cape Canaveral, Florida on July 15 for a 16-day mission with a crew of six Americans and one Canadian to help complete construction of the ISS.
On the second Endeavour spacewalk July 19, the astronauts moved equipment from Endeavour onto the ISS and repaired a malfunctioning toilet on the orbiting station. Read more

images 70x70 American children are now overweight. Childhood is now the United States’ worst health crisis, experts said, urging parents to ban television in kids’ rooms and lawmakers to slap a tax on sugar-laden sodas.

Two-thirds of US adults and around one fifth of American children are now overweight or obese, and the rising rate of obesity in the United States has had a debilitating effect on Americans’ health and US healthcare spending.

In addition to costing the United States of billions of dollars every year, the obesity epidemic means a generation of Americans could have shorter lives than their parents.
 American children are now overweight.
Childhood obesity “is the number one public health problem in the country, putting the younger generation at risk of being the first in the history of our country to have a shorter lifespan than their parents,” former president Bill Clinton told the “Weight of the Nation” conference.
The conference was the first gathering on obesity organized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Clinton was representing the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, which aims to significantly cut childhood obesity by 2015.
CDC officials outlined two dozen steps — ranging from banning televisions from children’s bedrooms to making it easier for people to buy fresh food — that would help lower obesity rates and related medical costs, which have nearly doubled since 1998.
Eleven years ago, the medical costs associated with obesity were around 78 billion dollars a year; …

001 vodka 70x70 Problem drunk persons.(video, photo)Alcohol is a potent drug and consequently it has a range of side effects, some pleasurable and some less so. The amount consumed and the circumstances under which the alcohol was taken can play a large part in determining the extent of drunkenness. Alcoholism is a sickness that affects the person’s brain. They are so worried about having a drink they do not think about the consequences. They may be too drunk to realize what they are doing

Living with someone who has a drink problem is damaging, upsetting and destructive. It’s not OK at all and you shouldn’t have to put up with it. It also means that by accepting it you’re helping him perpetuate the problem and realistically it doesn’t sound like a healthy situation for him either.
