money goldPeople who have a compulsive urge to collect and clutter their homes with junk can partly attribute their problem to genes, according to a British study.

Researchers from King’s College London used a twin study to find that genetic predisposition explained a large amount of the risk for compulsive hoarding — a mental health problem in which people have an overwhelming desire to accumulate items normally considered useless, like old newspapers or junk mail.

Of the more than 5,000 twins in the study, roughly 2 percent showed symptoms of compulsive hoarding and genes appeared to account for half of the variance in risk.

Researcher Dr. David Mataix-Cols said it has long been known that compulsive hoarding tends to run in families.vieniga ceriba

But he told Reuters Health that what has not been clear is whether that pattern is due to genes or to something in the home environment, like parenting practices. Read more

windows72 70x70 Windows 7 pirate version.Software vendors in Beijing are already selling pirated versions of the Windows 7 operating system after its official China release on Oct 23.

Roughly 30 percent of the 20 vendors METRO interviewed yesterday at Hailong Plaza, the largest market selling electronic products in Zhongguancun, offered a pirated version of Windows 7.

Piracy software vendors have kept a low profile when selling the pirated operating system due to a tough government attitude and Microsoft’s aggressive marketing campaigns.

“I am taking a high risk to sell the pirated version. The government has launched a very harsh campaign recently. We will be fined over 10,000 yuan and probably also sent to prison if they catch us,” a woman surname Zhao, who works for a video store in Hailong, told METRO.pirate windows 7

The demand for Windows 7 is high. A vendor in Hailong, surnamed Huo, said she could sell 20 genuine copies a day. It went out of stock on Monday. Read more

More middle-aged American women have heart attacks but the death rate has dropped in the past years, according to studies made by researchers at the University of Southern California.

The two studies also found that heart attacks for women have increased but for men there is a decrease.

“We found that men still have a higher prevalence than women, but what has happened is that the gap has narrowed,” said Dr. Amytis Towfighi, assistant professor of clinical neurology at USC and lead author of one of two reports in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Towfighi used data from two national surveys conducted from 1988 to 1994 and 1999 to 2004.doctor

She found that while 2.5 percent of the men and 0.7 percent of the women reported a history of heart attacks in the earlier survey, 2.2 percent of men and 1 percent of women reported heart attacks in the more recent survey. Read more

halloween partyHalloween (also spelled Hallowe’en) is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31. But many trick-or-treaters of all ages don’t know where this holiday comes from and what it’s really all about.
Halloween has origins in the ancient Gaelic festival known as Samhain, which is dervied from Old Irish and means roughly “summer’s end”. A similar festival was held by the ancient Britons and is known as Calan Gaeaf . The festival of Samhain celebrates the end of the “lighter half” of the year and beginning of the “darker half”, and is sometimes regarded as the “Celtic New Year”.halloween party
On All Hallows’ eve, the ancient Celts would place a skeleton on their window sill to represent the departed. Originating in Europe, these lanterns were first carved from a turnip or rutabaga. Believing that the head was the most powerful part of the body, containing the spirit and the knowledge, the Celts used the “head” of the vegetable to frighten off harmful spirits.
