Russia’s Federal Space Agency Roscosmos campaign to select a new group of cosmonauts. It is expected that the newcomers will be trained for a special mission.

The group will most likely be trained to fly to the Moon.

The contest is open, which means that any citizen of the Russian Federation having technical or medical education can take part in the contest. (...)

The Trevi Fountain was built by architect, Nicola Salvi, in 1732 and completed by Guiseppe Panini in 1762 and was decorated by artists from the Bernini School. The fountain’s water was supplied by one of Rome’s first aquaducts.

legend surrounding the fountain is that if you toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain you are destined to return to Rome, if you throw two coins you are assured the love of a desired partner and if you throw three coins you will marry your desired partner. (...)

This is the terrifying moment a Ford Focus smashes into a solid concrete wall at 120mph in the world’s fastest ever crash test.

Industry experts EuroNCAP normally crash vehicles at speeds of 40mph when giving production cars a safety rating.

But Five’s motoring show Fifth Gear wanted to see what would happen in a head-on collision at three times this speed…

The seagull showed off some spectacular acrobatics… by flying upside down to steal a shrimp dinner right from the mouth of an egret.

The unassuming egret had spent more than half an hour patiently fishing before finally landing the fish.

But within seconds a cheeky gull swooped upside down and snatched the tasty treat right from its mouth before spinning up right and flying off for a dinner of its own.(...)

DROGHEDA MUSEUM MILLMOUNT.

Millmount and Martello Tower are located on the great fort that towers over the town of Drogheda, County Louth, on an ancient hill overlooking the historic river Boyne. It is the gateway to the Boyne Valley, an area rich in heritage dating back over 9,000 years, while the town itself is over 800 years old.
Millmount Fort is without doubt one of the most dominant features of Drogheda, sited as it is atop its great mound, and clearly visible from most parts of the town and the surrounding areas.(...)

An emperor penguin that became an international star after being washed up in New Zealand hundreds of kilometers from his native Antarctica finally set sail for home Monday.

Happy Feet left Wellington aboard the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) research vessel, Tangaroa, after spending two months in Wellington Zoo.

The penguin, who was found exhausted and hungry on Peka Peka beach on the North Island’s Kapiti Coast, left the zoo in a travel crate specially designed to keep him cold and comfortable during the voyage.(...)

New York Gov. has declared a state of emergency as Irene nears.

U.S. President Barack Obama declared on Friday a state of emergency for New York state as Hurricane Irene is approaching the U.S. East Coast, threatening to wreak massive havoc on its path.

The declaration mandates the coordination of disaster relief efforts among federal agencies, including the Homeland Security Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which will provide federal emergency aid to the New York state.

The federal agencies will specifically help the counties of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau and Suffolk to carry out future relief efforts in the wake of the hurricane.(...)

If you’re packing lunch for your kid, chances are it will end up at unsafe temperatures before it’s eaten.

That’s according to a Texas study that tested more than 700 preschoolers’ lunch packs and found less than two percent of the meats, vegetables and dairy products were in the safe temperature zone.

“It was a shock when we discovered that more than 90 percent of the perishable items in these packed lunches were kept at unsafe temperatures,” said Fawaz Almansour, a doctoral student at the University of Texas in Austin.

His study, released on Monday in the journal Pediatrics, is the first to check how the food that kids’ bring to school is doing about an hour and a half before lunchtime.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, perishable foods kept between 40 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 60 degrees Celsius) for more than two hours are no longer safe to eat.

Although 45 percent of the packed lunches included an ice pack and 12 percent were kept in refrigerators, nearly all of the perishable foods were in the danger zone.

That means bacteria that cause food poisoning — like E. coli and Salmonella — could be multiplying quickly inside the sandwiches that kids eat, Almansour said.

According to the CDC, one in six Americans gets food poisoning every year, but it is unclear how many cases are caused by lukewarm sack lunches.

“This study is an eye-opener more than anything else,” Almansour told Reuters Health. “It shows there is a problem.”

His recommendation? Pack the lunch with lots of icepacks, and have your kid take it out of the container at school and put it in the fridge.
